A modified iPhone Air with a physical SIM card slot has appeared in China, despite the fact that the model was initially only sold worldwide in an eSIM version. According to data published on Chinese sources, the device was redesigned by enthusiasts affiliated with one of the electronics stores in the Huaqiangbei market in Shenzhen. This was reported by GSMArena.

Installing the slot next to the USB-C connector requires changing the internal layout of the smartphone. In particular, the original Taptic Engine vibration motor has been replaced with a more compact analog one, retaining basic haptic feedback and freeing up space for the SIM card reader.
In the published images, the device works with a China Telecom SIM card, makes voice calls and connects to a 5G mobile network. It is also reported that after modifications, the smartphone retained the level of protection against dust and water according to the IP68 standard.
iPhone Air officially launched on September 9, 2025, along with the rest of the iPhone 17 series. Global sales of the device began on September 19, 2025, when the smartphone went on sale in many countries. In China, sales started later – the model went on sale on October 22, 2025 after regulatory authorities and carriers licensed the use of eSIM technology.
Previously, Apple appointed a new design director for iPhone and other products.
