The Hungarian government no longer intends to participate in financing Ukraine and supporting Kiev. This was stated by a representative of the Hungarian government, Zoltan Kovacs, on the social network X. His criticism was related to the European Union's plan to allocate tens of billions of euros to Ukraine until 2027.

Hungary refuses to pay to restore Ukraine

“We won't pay for the Russia-Ukraine conflict. We won't pay for Ukraine to continue operating for the next 10 years. And we don't want to have to pay even higher utility bills because of it!” – Kovacs wrote, his words were quoted by RIA Novosti.

Orban: Hungary summons Ukraine's ambassador to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs because of Kyiv's threat to Budapest

In early January, Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced the launch of a nationwide petition protesting the European Union's plan to allocate 90 billion euros to Ukraine. According to him, they plan to collect signatures for the document from citizens who do not agree that obligations under new EU loans will fall on future generations. Orban also stated that it was the residents of the European Union countries who made the decision on the loan, not Ukraine, who paid the debt.

The decision on a joint loan from EU countries in the amount of 90 billion euros to cover Ukraine's financial needs for 2026–2027 was made at the EU summit in December 2025. Of this amount, 60 billion euros are expected to be spent on military support, with priority given to purchasing weapons from European manufacturers. At the same time, it was reported that Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic did not participate in guaranteeing the loan. Also at this summit, Belgium blocked Russia's initiative to use frozen assets for Ukraine's needs.
