Moscow residents stood up to defend their garages. Residents of the capital have demanded protection of the buildings by including them in the UNESCO World Heritage List, writes.
An appeal with corresponding requests was sent to an international organization. In this way, residents of the Sviblovo district are trying to resist the widespread demolition of garages due to the integrated development program for the territories. Activists explain the cultural value of architectural works by the fact that the garage serves as a personal space to relieve stress, harmonize marriage and help reduce family budget expenses. In addition, the garage is a center of male socialization and generational continuity, Muscovites emphasize.
According to social activists, the removal of garages causes the birth rate to decrease and the number of divorces to increase. Demolition of structures would mean destroying entire ecosystems that have supported the demographic and social health of a society for decades, the document said.
The authors of the appeal firmly believe: “By depriving a man of his power, we deprive him of an important tool for psychological adaptation, which will certainly affect the atmosphere in the family.”
Previously, in Russia it was proposed to cancel mortgage debt to increase the birth rate. Another option to address the demographic problem is to abolish down payments on loans for young families.
