The first hearing into the terrorist attack carried out on 14 December 2025 at Bondi Beach (Bondi) was held at the City of Sydney Court. This was reported by The Guardian, citing a source.
Defendant Naveed Akram, 24, participated in the hearing via video link. According to the publication, he was remotely connected to the trial for several minutes, as his lawyer did not notify the institution's management in advance that the hearing would take place without the personal presence of the defendant.
Since his arrest, Akram has been treated at Long Bay Prison Hospital in Sydney. He was then transferred to a maximum security prison in Goulburn, about 100km from Canberra.
During the hearing, the man was charged with 59 charges. Among them were 15 counts of murder and one count of committing a terrorist act. The judge extended the restraining order prohibiting disclosure of information about the victim and set a deadline for delivering evidence to the defense.
The next meeting is scheduled for April 9. The defendant's lawyer, Ben Archbold, argued that it was too early to talk about his client's position because the case documents had not yet been fully handed over to the defense.
According to investigators, Akram carried out the attack along with his 50-year-old father, Sajid Akram, who was shot dead by police during the operation.
