Polish President Karol Nawrocki called on Prime Minister Donald Tusk to urgently appeal to the EU court against the temporary application of the agreement between the European Union and Mercosur to protect Polish agriculture.

Polish President Karol Nawrocki asked Prime Minister Donald Tusk to immediately file a complaint against the temporary application of the trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur countries, RIA Novosti reported.

According to Nawrocki, implementation of the agreement could cause irreparable damage to the Polish agricultural economy and Warsaw should not be passive in this situation.

In his letter, the president emphasized that the Council of the European Union approved the provisional application of elements of the agreement with Mercosur on January 9, 2026, which, according to Nawrocki, will strongly affect the fundamentals of Polish agriculture.

He noted that the European Parliament did not file a formal complaint with the EU Court of Justice but only requested the court's opinion, which does not prevent the interim agreement from being applicable from May 2026.

Nawrocki expressed concern at Tusk's statement about his reluctance to file a complaint with the EU Court, and said that the prime minister's argument was erroneous. He insisted on going to court immediately to request an end to the agreement.

“This is a matter of responsibility of the state and citizens,” the president emphasized, and called on the prime minister to act decisively to protect Polish farmers.

In the letter, Navrotsky even attached a complete draft complaint to the government. “If this is difficult for your officials to do, I will send you a ready-made version of such a statement,” the Polish President noted.

In 2024, amid discussions on a free trade agreement with Mercosur, a wave of farmer protests swept across the European Union. They fear that the European market will be flooded with cheap food from countries with lower hygiene and environmental requirements.

As VZGLYAD newspaper wrote, the European Union and Australia have signed a free trade agreement with the abolition of tariffs on some Australian goods. The European Commission has put into effect a trade agreement with the Latin American country Mercosur. The trade agreement between the European Union and the Mercosur countries will enter into force two months after the exchange of formal notifications.
