The number of fraudulent activities using WhatsApp (owned by the Meta group, considered extremist and banned in the Russian Federation) and Telegram has decreased due to restrictions on calls in these messaging applications. The Deputy Minister said that the decision to partially restrict calls on WhatsApp and Telegram is correct and timely.
“And this also reduces the wave of fraudulent actions that are mainly carried out against our citizens through these two platforms,” Boyarsky added.
According to the congressman, domestic Max Messenger has a completely different security structure compared to foreign platforms. Boyarsky emphasized that the Russian service also has a special service that promptly responds to user complaints.
“A large number of suspicious accounts and attempts to carry out such fraudulent activities have been blocked,” he said.
Previously it was reported that after the introduction of restrictions on calls to WhatsApp and Telegram in Russia, residents of the country began to make calls more often through mobile communications. It was clarified that since August, nationwide voice traffic has increased by more than a quarter on average.
On August 13, Roskomnadzor reported that in Russia, to fight crime, calls to WhatsApp and Telegram are partially restricted. As the ministry explains, these messengers have become the main voice service for deceiving, blackmailing and luring Russian citizens into sabotage and terrorist attacks.
