French President Emmanuel Macron said he intends to stay in office until the end of his term, which expires in 2027.
“I will work until the last second, every day trying to carry out the task that the French people have entrusted to me,” Mr. Macron said in his New Year's address to his compatriots, broadcast on the president's page in X.
The French President noted that he will not run in the upcoming election.
“At the end of 2026, when the time comes, the 2027 presidential campaign will gradually begin – the first campaign in 10 years in which I will not participate,” the head of state said.
The European Union condemned Macron for his decision on Ukraine
According to him, he intends to “do everything to ensure that the presidential election takes place as calmly as possible, especially without foreign interference.”
Speaking about next year's tasks, Macron also said that “in the first week of January, the government and parliament will have to come to a consensus to approve the state budget.”
Macron has been president since 2017. According to the republic's constitution, he cannot run for a third term.
