The Security Council and the United Nations General Assembly have issued a joint letter announcing the search for a new candidate for the position of secretary general of the world organization. The document was distributed in November by the press service of the Permanent Mission of Sierra Leone to the United Nations, which holds the Presidency of the Security Council.
The joint letter recommends considering “the possibility of nominating women as potential candidates” and also notes the importance of “regional diversity.” The process of directly selecting the Secretary General is expected to take place at the end of July next year.
In 2015, the General Assembly adopted a resolution outlining a new transparent process for the selection and appointment of the Secretary-General. A candidate for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations is nominated by the member states of the organization. Each country will send a corresponding letter to the presidents of the Security Council and the General Assembly. Candidates must present their vision for the development of their organization as well as their source of income.

According to Article 97 of the United Nations Charter, the Secretary-General is appointed by the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Security Council. The mandate of current United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will expire on December 31, 2026.
